Spanish Grammar Exercises

Learning the right grammar is the most important aspect in studying a foreign language. Without the knowledge of the proper grammar that governs a language, you will not be able to put your study into actual use. Your vocabulary, your sentence structures, your part of speech will all be useless if you don’t master the language’s grammar.

What is grammar?

In linguistics, grammar is defined as a study of the rules that dictate the use of a certain language. In the traditional sense, studying grammar means you are studying syntax, a set of rules that governs the proper constructions of sentences in the language. This includes studying what proper parts of speech are employed to construct the sentence, and where they are to be placed correctly within the sentence. Nowadays, it also includes studying how to proper speak words (phonology and phonetics) aside from syntax.

Grammar is an essential component of every language, including Spanish.

So how does one learn grammar?

Grammar is learned through the use of lessons. Through these lessons, you are first acquainted with the rudiments of the language in the basic levels. In Spanish, these lessons are aimed to teach a beginner the different parts of speech. Here, the lessons will introduce you to some common words that are frequently spoken in every day conversations in Spanish. Basic sentence construction is also included in these lessons.

Mastery of these beginning lessons is instrumental to learning the language. Without a solid foundation in these beginning lessons, one cannot expect to comprehend the more advanced lessons as he progresses further into the language.

However, studying grammar through lessons is not enough to understand the rules regarding the use of the language. These lessons need to be instilled into the mind. It is similar to the physical sciences. For example, in martial arts, one needs to repeatedly practice the movements to a point that the body already remembers what to do, and has already adapted into the movements. Similarly, in linguistics, there exist exercises that will help a student remember the lessons through tests.

What are the common Spanish exercises?

The most common exercises in Spanish take the forms of quizzes. In these quizzes, you are given either a set of sentences in English to translate into Spanish, or some Spanish sentences that you have to change into another form depending on what lesson you are studying.

For example, one website has an exercise for remembering the plural forms of nouns and adjectives, as well as other parts of speech. This website presents a set of nouns in singular forms, which the student has to present in its plural form. In another exercise, this time focusing on the verb gustar, the student has to translate an English sentence into the corresponding Spanish sentence that uses the verb gustar.
